Schaumagazin – a flagship project for contemporary art in Schwerin
The open art warehouse is a place for viewing, exhibiting, preserving, researching, and collecting contemporary art.
It operates as a "Schaumagazin" that invites visitors—young people, children, adventurous families, students, and researchers—to experience the collections through guided tours, exhibitions, and events, either by observing, playfully exploring, or critically engaging with them.
To make this possible, the City of Schwerin is providing the architecturally distinctive office and reception area of the former industrial complex.
For the renovation of the first major construction phase in the future KIW Quarter, urban development funding totaling 4.72 million euros will be allocated to the SCHAUMAGAZIN over the next two years by the Federal Government.
A funding project of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building since 2020.
01.
Discover andengage with art
At Schaumagazin, visitors enter individual artist rooms in guided groups.
Participants engage in conversation about what they see, experiencing the artworks in a more informal and intimate way.
These personal exhibition spaces offer deep insight into each artist’s work, allowing us to experience the regenerative power of art and uncover its immediate relevance to society.
02.
Storing andpreserving art
To better unfold the powerful and innovative potential of contemporary works by artists, the Schaumagazin presents each body of work in separate, individually designed rooms.
These solo presentations function as both exhibition and storage spaces, placing a strong emphasis on the preservation of the artworks.
03.
Research anddiscover art
Such bodies of work offer all visitors unique insights, while providing researchers with a solid framework for deeper reflection on the pieces.
The findings gained from studying artistic processes contribute to a deeper understanding of the works.
Research reveals connections, sheds light on the relationships within the oeuvre, and explains the materials used and their particular characteristics.
These scholarly insights enable all of us to identify, explore, and interpret the direct links between contemporary art and the issues of our society.
04.
Art: collectand expand
The Schaumagazin in Schwerin presents works from individual collections and archives.
To expand the collections on display, a jury convenes each year to decide which artworks or archival materials will be added.
